Old Time Radio's Comedy Couples, by Dan McGuire

Long-time Nostalgia Digest contributor Dan McGuire was a kid in grammar school during the 1940s, the peak years of radio's so-called Golden Age, when radio was a prime source of entertainment for most American families.  Afternoons, Dan tuned in many of the serialized kids adventure programs.  In the evening, he joined his parents for many of the mystery and other drama programs and anything that was in the comedy category.  The latter included many husband and wife sitcoms.  Most of these starred actors and actresses who were simply playing a role on the various programs.  But five of old time radios couples shared a rare distinction: they were married both on their programs and in real life:

Goodman and Jane Ace (Easy Aces)

     Phil Harris and Alice Faye

     Ozzie and Harriet Nelson

     George Burns and Gracie Allen

Jim and Marian Jordan (Fibber McGee and Molly)

In weekly adventures--or misadventures--involving a trouble-prone husband or wife, each of these couples provoked smiles, chuckles, and hearty laughter for the folks at home with a variety of good-humored and clean entertainment.  Return with Dan McGuire to those thrilling days of yesteryear as he recalls the lives and careers of these beloved couples who brought laughter into the homes of millions of listeners.
